1.
Avoid Eating Sticky and Hard Food
Items
In general, crowns are
considered durable and strong. But just like your natural teeth, you can still
damage them by chewing on ice, hard candies, and sturdy nuts. If you get your
crowns chipped, cracked, or broken, it means you will have to replace your
crowns earlier than you normally would. Sticky food and those food items that
require lots of chewing can also weaken or loosen your crown. Besides, bits of
food can also get trapped between your crown and gum. Thus, it is best to avoid
eating foods that can harm your new dental crowns, especially Emax crowns.
2.
Brush and Floss Your Teeth Daily
Regardless of whether your crowns are real or artificial, you need daily brushing and flossing to keep them healthy and sound. Even though the crown extends over the visible tooth structure, you need to brush it to remove plaque and retain its beauty. Apart from brushing, flossing is also critical because germs and food particles can still remain trapped.
However, if you have a temporary crown for now, you should practice caution while flossing so that you don’t dislodge it. Once you get permanent crowns fitted in your mouth, you can floss around the same way you do for natural teeth.
If your teeth are
sensitive to hot or cold foods, you can use toothpaste specially formulated for
sensitive teeth.
3.
Don’t Bite Your Nails and Chew on
Hard Objects
If you have a habit of biting nails or chewing on pencils and other hard objects, you need to get rid of it. Your teeth are not tools to open hard-to-nudge bottle caps or crack super robust nuts. Grinding teeth under stress is also not good for your crown durability. All these bad habits can break or deform both natural and artificial crowns. Besides, hard objects can splinter and get lodged between your gums or may even damage them. If you have tried to leave these habits before too but didn’t get any success, you need to put more effort to protect your teeth.
4.
Use a Night Guard If Necessary
Grinding or clenching
your teeth during the day while you are awake is one thing and you are aware
that you are doing it. However, if you do the same while sleeping, you are not
aware of it, which can lead to serious damage to your crowns. Regular biting
already exerts a lot of pressure on your crown. Exposing your teeth to grinding
and clenching can increase the pressure significantly and the risk of breaking
your crowns. So, if you grind or clench your teeth while sleeping, you must use
a guard.
Lastly, we highly recommend you to regularly see your dentist, no matter what type of crowns you have or if you have still natural teeth.
